Chances are most of you are familiar with a local chapter of Rotary International, as there are over 34,000 clubs in over 200 countries and territories comprising 1.2 million members. Founded in 1905 in Chicago, Rotarians take a very local approach to serving communities while also tackling global issues such as Polio eradication around the world. This organization epitomizes the title of this article which also happens to be their motto.

We are very fortunate to have several active chapters here in Sonoma County. The Petaluma Sunrise Rotary has a diverse membership of community and business leaders that give selflessly of their time and resources to make our community a better place for everyone. X2nSat is proud to sponsor and be involved in many of their local initiatives. Our CEO, Garrett Hill is an active, long-time member of this chapter.

Recently the Petaluma Sunrise Rotary helps put on their largest fundraising community event: The 7th Annual Sonoma County Backroad Challenge Bike Ride. This event regularly draws over a 1,000 cyclists who traverse the scenic and beautiful blacktop roads of Sonoma County. Events such as these support many different programs in the local community such as the Boys and Girls Club, COTS, as well as Rotary International initiatives around the world.

Many of the local members recently attended the 2017 International Rotary Convention in Atlanta. Participants heard passionate and inspiring keynote speeches from Bill Gates, Jack Nicklaus, Ashton Kutcher, John Cena, and a host of others on a range of topics including humanitarian programs, human trafficking and Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign. Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication 2-to-1, up to $35 million per year. Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than $1.6 billion to end polio. This program has provided over 2.5 billion children around the world with the Polio vaccine!

Organizations such as Rotary are fantastic examples of thinking locally and acting globally. Not only do Rotary members help improve the quality of life in their own communities, but also in developing countries around the world. There are many other dedicated volunteer organizations that are woven into the fabric of Sonoma County that are just as committed to helping our friends and neighbors in need. We are proud to do our small part to give back to our local community. Hopefully this will inspire and encourage everyone to continue to look for opportunities to serve those in need.
